Happy 2015!

We’re off to a late blogging start because we spent New Years and the surrounding days off the grid, in a cabin in Virginia’s Douthat State Park. The cabin was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, and its living area had just enough floor space to lay out three dog beds in front of the fireplace.

Yep, we took Orrie, Della, and June on their first road trip, and overall they did quite well, hiking up to nine miles a day with us on well-groomed trails in the Allegheny Mountains. Old friends rented another park cabin, so as our wiped-out canines collapsed on their beds, we spent the evenings drinking wine and playing board games like Apples to Apples, Cranium, and Taboo. Nice way to start the year.

We got home on Friday and picked up three kittens on Sunday, our third litter in a row from the Wetzel shelter in WV. Like the Angels and Potlucks, these three have already cleared our adoption weight threshold. Unlike those litters, these kittens have minor URI issues we need to resolve before sending them home.

By the time we got them, this posse had already been entered into the Homeward Trails database under their Wetzel names, so all we had to do was name the litter. For obvious reasons, we’re calling them the 3D kittens.

Dryfus (not sure whether this name is a misspelled homage to a mutual fund) is a playful orange tabby who also happens to be a genuine peep-cat. While his sibs retreat under the futon, he trots forward to greet us and purrs instantly when we pick him up.

Duncan is a more reticent version of his lookalike brother. He also loves being held and stroked, but first we have to snag him as he angles away from us on the floor. Duncan has cool orange markings spotting the white fur on his cheeks and chin.

Dee (officially Dee-Dee, but we’ve already used that name) is a classic tuxie female whose white highlights are almost perfectly symmetrical. Looks-wise, she reminds us of Nanette of the Flying Nuns. But Nanette was a dominatrix, and Dee is quite shy, at least with people.

Fortunately, Dee seems to enjoy playing stringball and wrestling with her “brothers”. On arrival at 50K, she was easily the heaviest of the 3Ds, suggesting that maybe she’s not really related to them. But after dropping weight for three straight days, Dee has lost her weight advantage. We’ve started giving the 3Ds lysine gel, and we’ll launch them on Clavamox if Dee hasn’t started gaining by tomorrow.

The 3Ds need to get their ducks in a row quickly, because a pre-approved adopter is coming to meet them Saturday and hopes to take two kittens home. Fingers crossed!

Finally, here’s a shot of Potlucks Bella (Jello) and Gio (Meatloaf) roughing it at their new home. More like the JackPotLucks!
