Aussies Take the Court

Sunday
1/26/2014

We spent a lot of time last week playing Cat Dancer with the Gates furballs to get them out and busy with us nearby. The boys love the game, and Pearlie does too, but she preferred to stay in the safe nest and stick her paws out to play. We felt that it has been a good way for them to forget to be shy around us.

However, everything changed in a big way on Saturday night, when an HT volunteer picked up a mom and 4 kittens at a shopping mall parking lot (where their transport from North Carolina dropped them off) and brought them to our house. We weren’t sure what would happen, but we just dumped them all in the villa with the Gates kits. Nobody seemed ready to kill anyone else, so we shut the door and hoped they would all be friends by morning.

Well, mom is the only one with her nose out of joint. Since the Gatesers are avoiding her, she just hisses and swats at any of her own kittens if they get near her. She loves being petted by us, however. I imagine she’ll calm down in a couple of days.

Mom, who looks a lot like our President’s Day mom, Minnie, came with the name Naomi, which we’ll keep. We decided to go with an Australian Open theme, since that tourney wrapped up this weekend. Plus, we have two boys and two girls, which makes for easy naming based on the finalists.

None of the kits inherited Naomi’s luxurious long fur, but Rafa is a tuxie like her.

His fur is a bit longer than usual – he’s a handsome guy with a white bib and spotted feet. He’s also really friendly and cuddly.

Stan is all white with some gray spots. He is a bit shy at this point – but very attractive.

The girls are two classic torties – Li is a super lap lover.

She is outgoing and very peep oriented.

Her sister Dominika (Nika) is a bit shy at this point. Although their tortie coloring is very similar, Nika has an oranger face and darker feet. She’s also a big girl – biggest in the litter.

The Gates kits are hanging out in the nest wondering what hit! We haven’t seen them interacting much with the newcomers, but that will come. We’re hoping that they’ll forget to be shy with us with all the new activity in their world! Needless to say, it’s pretty busy in the old villa now...
